Monthly report – June 2017

June in the shelter has shown us how difficult this summer is going to be because of extremely small number of volunteers and summer jobs which most of us work. Days are simply not long enough to do everything that is needed, reports about abandoned and lost animals come several times a day, many animals in the shelter need full-time care. Viral laryngitis has effected us this month – nothing was dangerous and they are all good, but we had to give therapies to dogs several times a day and that was very difficult because of only few volunteers. We were literally busy from early mornings to late night hours, in the shelter with lamps after all-day shifts at work.
In June the shelter left Aura, Fred, Lisa, Max, Flynn, Bigi and Shorty. They all got people with great hearts with whom they will enjoy until the end of their life.
We took three sick dogs from a dog pound and we managed to save their life with our daily therapies. Also, they didn’t have to wait long to be adopted and all three of them are already in their forever homes.
In the middle of the month we cleaned all dogs against parasites, both inside and outside, and that required full-time job of two people.
We are happy to say that we have two new friends who often come to help us. They are our „men power“. Goran and Ivan. It is so nice when we can count on their help in physically hard work.
Our wonderful friends from Denmark, Niels and Vibeke, visited us in June. We always love to see them, they are one of the few who loved us, supported and helped us from the very start. We were very happy to receive package from Germany from Christiane and Vera who gave gifts to Mila’s puppies. Besides them, there were lots of new friends with generous donations for which we are all very grateful. Support and love fill our hearts with positive energy which we really need in these moments.
June was beautified by our dear friends, Karina with her family, Claudia and Erwin with children and Jana with her family who even organized a day for big cleaning of the roof and the fort of Snoopy. These brave and hardworking people worked all day on unbearable heat and we can only thank them from the bottom of our hearts for the tremendous help they have provided us. Of course, their presence and support is comfort for our tired hearts, it give us strength and say that we are not alone, which really means a lot to us. Dear friends, thank you.
We took the last group of dogs on the beach one more time. We went to new location, right before bad weather and it was fun and very nice. Nobody was very enthusiastic to enter the sea because of waves, but they played so well on the shore, and so were we with them.
We also took the old dog Noah who unfortunately didn’t have a beautiful life before shelter. He was full of fleas and grass, with a trace of the chain on his neck and a large tumor on the back leg because of which he could barely walk. After therapies and cutting hair, he began to recover but he is still extremely skinny and weak. With painkillers, lots of vitamins, meat and lots of vegetables we are trying to help him live the rest of his life as good as possible, with people who love him endlessly.
We also took an abandoned dog from Premantura, small Zuzi who was found wandering around. The visit to the vet didn’t bring good news: simply said, Zuzi was all broken – pelvis, hip, knee, it was all broken. Considering that the pelvis has alredy healed wrong and the way to fix it is to break the bone right next to the nerve which is highly risky, veterinarian’s recommendation was not to touch the pelvis for now and to repair the injury of the hip of right leg and the injury of the knee and see how recovery is going to be. Procedures which have been done: FHO – removal of the head and neck of the thigh bone and TTT – transplantation of tuberositas of the tibia + deepening of the patellar canal. The cost of the surgery for us is huge 4.650 kuna, we will see how is the recovery going to be, at least we have to sterilize her and take out her baby teeth because they hadn’t dropped and now she has a double row of teeth and an inflated gums.
From dog pound came our new mummy Sissy, a beautiful dog who gave birth to 11 puppies in the middle of this month. Unfortunately, because of the extremely bad state of Sissy, in the first two days 9 puppies died. Brother and sister, the little fighters are making a good progress and Sissy has changed from extremely scared and frightened dog to nice dog full of trust for all of us.
Also, we have found very fast a home for puppy who was on his way to dog pound, we took 14 kittens from the road + a small one who’s right leg had to be amputated because of the infection + a big cat from feeding place in Verudela, we tried to save his eye but unfortunately there was no success. They are all looking for their new homes.
Late in night in the middle of the month, we got a message about 5 puppies abandoned at Duga uvala. There was no choice and we took them. They are currently in the vaccination phase and we are hoping for the best.
Two puppies from Dijana’s home where they were temporary placed came to the shelter. They were thrown in the yard of veterinarian station in Pula. They are now a part of Snoopy family and waiting for their homes.
End of the month didn’t bring good news, a small puppy was found near Zminj, who was temporarily placed in Karlo’s home until he is vaccinated two times. Thank you, Karlo, very much for that. He is one of the few who didn’t just turn his head, he risked some comfort and saved the life of an innocent being. Thank you Karlo.
Although they were vaccinated 3 times for infectious diseases, regularly cleaned of worms, cared for and loved, at the end of June Mila’s puppies began to show symptoms of parvoviroses. On the same day, a test for parvovirus was made and came out positive. On the last day of the month, the battle first lost beloved Bella. Our hearts are broken in hundreds of pieces. We, who carry a great love for them all, but at the same time an enormous burden of responsibility on our shoulders towards all our dogs, are in this moment emotionally and physically broken. There are too much need and unfortunately we can’t save everyone. We hope that our fellow citizens will wake up at some point and realize that this is not the “job” of few fanatics who think they can change the world, but is the moral responsibility of every man to help and protect the weaker. Snoopy is always available for advice, even to help finantially but it is really important for people to help us when we have to check dogs who are wandering on streets, to take dogs to check their microchips in vet stations and to offer a temporary home. No matter how hard we try, without help it is impossible to move forward.
Thank you all for being a part of our dogs’ lives.
